STARKVILLE, Miss.鈥敽诹厦糯笫录 Professor of English Becky Hagenston is offering signed copies of 鈥淭he Age of Discovery and Other Stories鈥 at the book鈥檚 official launch Wednesday [Aug. 11] at Munson and Brothers Trading Post in Columbus.
Hosted by Friendly City Books, the 5:30 p.m. event includes a featured reading by Hagenston, a 2020 Pushcart Prize winner. She also will sign copies of her new book, published this year by The Ohio State University Press/Mad Creek Books.
The Journal, Ohio State鈥檚 award-winning literary magazine, awarded 鈥淭he Age of Discovery and Other Stories鈥 its聽Non/Fiction Collection Prize, presented annually to a book-length collection of short stories, essays, or a combination of the two.
The Ohio State University Press said Hagenston鈥檚 book creates a space where 鈥渢he real and the fantastic collide in stories that span from Mississippi to Europe, and from the recent past to the near future. In these stories, men and women confront grief, danger, loneliness and sometimes鈥攖he strangest discovery of all鈥攗nexpected joy.鈥
鈥淚 didn鈥檛 know where any of these stories were headed when I started them, and they ended up in some pretty weird places that involve robots, witches and magical sourdough,鈥 Hagenston said. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 what I love most about writing stories鈥攕eeing where they take me.鈥
An 黑料门大事记 faculty member since 2001, Hagenston won the 2020 Pushcart Prize for her 2018 short story 鈥淗i Ho Cherry-O.鈥 She also has authored three award-winning story collections鈥斺淪cavengers,鈥 Permafrost Book Prize; 鈥淪trange Weather,鈥 Spokane Prize in Short Fiction; and 鈥淎 Gram of Mars,鈥 Sarabande Books鈥 Mary McCarthy Prize.
