Legends Rundgren and Cross kick off 黑料门大事记 Riley Center鈥檚 Fall Performing Arts Series
MERIDIAN, Miss.鈥揙ne of the greatest recordings of all time gets all-star treatment at the 黑料门大事记 Riley Center on Thursday, September 26 at 7:30 p.m. 鈥淚t Was 50 Years Ago Today: A Tribute to the Beatles鈥 White Album鈥 features Todd Rundgren, Christopher Cross, Micky Dolenz (The Monkees), Jason Scheff (Chicago) and Joey Molland (Badfinger).
The Beatles recorded and released the album in 1968, writing many of the songs while studying meditation in India with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. The official name is 鈥淭he Beatles,鈥 but fans know it as 鈥淭he White Album鈥 because of the plain white cover. Its 30 songs include such classics as 鈥淩evolution,鈥 鈥淥b-La-Di, Ob-La-Da,鈥 鈥淏ack in the U.S.S.R.鈥 and 鈥淲hile My Guitar Gently Weeps.鈥
The legendary musicians will perform songs from the album as well as some of their own hits. Here鈥檚 a closer look at those artists:
- Todd Rundgren began his professional career as a singer, songwriter and record producer in 1966. His hits include 鈥淲e Gotta Get You a Woman,鈥 鈥淚 Saw the Light,鈥 鈥淏ang the Drum All Day鈥 and 鈥淗ello It鈥檚 Me.鈥
- Christopher Cross won five Grammy Awards for his quintuple-platinum 1979 debut album, 鈥淐hristopher Cross.鈥 It spawned such hit singles as 鈥淩ide Like the Wind,鈥 鈥淣ever Be the Same鈥 and 鈥淪ailing.鈥 His 鈥淎rthur鈥檚 Theme (Best That You Can Do)鈥 from the 1981 movie 鈥淎rthur鈥 won an Academy Award for Best Original Song.
- Micky Dolenz played drums and sang with the Monkees, a group created for the 1966-68 TV series 鈥淭he Monkees.鈥 He provided the lead vocals for several of the band鈥檚 hits, among them 鈥淟ast Train to Clarksville,鈥 鈥淧leasant Valley Sunday鈥 and 鈥淚鈥檓 a Believer.鈥
- Jason Scheff played bass and sang with Chicago from 1985 till 2016, contributing lead vocals on such hits as 鈥淲hat Kind of Man Would I Be?鈥 (which he co-wrote) and 鈥淲ill You Still Love Me?鈥
- Joey Molland played guitar and sang with Badfinger from 1969 through 1974, when the band鈥檚 hits included 鈥淣o Matter What,鈥 鈥淲ithout You,鈥 鈥淒ay After Day鈥 and 鈥淏aby Blue.鈥 As the only surviving member of the band鈥檚 classic lineup, he continues to tour periodically with Badfinger.
